For more than 30 years, we have helped many of the world's most dynamic and ambitious companies develop into market leaders. Our role as trusted business advisors has given us the opportunity to put a huge array of organizations under the microscope. Along the way, we've built up a wealth of knowledge of what powers a handful of companies to rise above the others.
The Exceptional Enterprise model captures these insights and shows how a business makes the journey to market leadership. The model highlights the six fundamental business challenges a company should address, how they change over time and the key attributes a business needs to make it to the top.
A company will typically go through three distinct growth stages:
Emerging stage — companies concentrate on identifying the market opportunity, available sources of funding and the right people to help kickstart the business.
Rapid-growth stage — companies focus their energies on becoming a supplier of choice for their most valuable customers, on managing expansion and securing additional capital to accelerate growth.
Next-generation market leader — the best businesses turn their attention to working effectively across global markets, try to balance the entrepreneurial spirit with corporate culture and ensure they optimize their capital structure to help meet shareholder expectations.
Achieving market leadership means successfully addressing these six challenges:
Customer recruitment and management
Managing finance
Managing risk
Operational effectiveness
People recruitment and retention
Transactions and alliances
The IPO: a transformation, not a transaction
Many fast-growing, private businesses see an IPO as an excellent route to accelerating growth and a step towards achieving market leadership. A successful listing on one of the world’s capital markets, while always the culmination of months or years of hard work, can provide benefits such as:
access to financing to complete a strategic acquisition
opportunities to expand your business into new markets
an exit opportunity for your private equity or other investors
improved perceptions of your business and brand with customers, suppliers and employees.
An IPO marks a turning point in the life of a company. Exceptional enterprises don’t view an IPO as simply a financial transaction, bur rather, recognize it as a complex transformation from private to public and start their IPO journey well-informed and well-prepared.
Venture Capital Advisory Group
We established the Venture Capital Advisory Group to give venture-backed emerging companies the best possible start on their journey to market leadership.
This group works with leading venture capital firms and their portfolio companies in the venture capital hotbeds around the world.
Acting as a single point of contact for venture capital funds, the Venture Capital Advisory Group marshals Ernst & Young’s global resources to offer creative approaches to issues facing fast growth companies and their investors.
We also make a difference by providing quarterly insights and market data to help venture capital firms, their partners and portfolio companies achieve their potential. Our regular workshops and coaching sessions, held in various locations across the globe, allow entrepreneurs to connect with the venture capital community and with each other, and share and learn from leading practices.
